Driving with the Fear While Running a Startup

At the point of near exhaustion last Friday on day nine of a 10 day trip, I got a second wind and became super-excited when talking to Becky, our Operations Specialist, about her new responsibilities managing our marketing projects. I was so happy she was stepping up and taking control. As she was talking I was almost in tears of joy, until I realized I was completely turned around—I’d driven to Marina Del Rey instead of Playa Del Rey…I could see the lights of Playa Del Rey in the distance but there was water in front of me.

Why It’s Important to Own the IP Rights to Your Work: Marvel vs. Kirby

Image Courtesy: JD Hancock via FlickrComic books have become the source material for most of our summer blockbusters, their inventive worlds consumed by the film industry Galactus to slake its hunger for profitable material. Their expansion to the big screen, along with forays into the worlds of television, video games, and other media, have turned superhero franchises into financial juggernauts. If the proliferation of comic book conventions is any indication, there are countless nerds breathlessly waiting to hand over their money to the Marvels and DCs of the world for a glimpse at Batman v. Superman, the Avengers v. Ultron, or the X-Men v. diminishing returns. And after years of dispute over a copyright lawsuit, an industry legend’s estate may be getting its due.

Introducing the Business of Legal

No business wants to give away its products. As an attorney, when you spend time evaluating potential clients that don’t pan out, you’re giving away your product—valuable billable hours. If a client needs only basic professional services and your firm is looking for bigger opportunities, your efforts can be time wasted.

With the right technology your firm can identify a potential client’s intellectual property, determine contract needs, and reveal legal issues that need your expertise. Since the process is initiated at the clerical level, most client pre-qualification information can be gathered without lawyer involvement or time. The lawyer’s first notice of a potential client can be accompanied by enough relevant information to determine the next step.

Image Courtesy: Perspecsys Photos via Flickr

Data security is one of the foremost concerns of our current digital age. With so much of our lives being hosted online, databases are a treasure trove of personally identifiable information for hackers. We like to believe that companies take the best measures possible to protect that information, and perhaps that’s true, but there are far too many stories of data security breaches to think that it’ll never happen to you. Personally, I can’t count the number of times I’ve worried  someone might gain access to sensitive information like financial statements, tax returns, “Lord of the Rings” fan fic…er, business documentation. And now one of the most popular cloud storage solutions may find itself under fire for security concerns.
